The Swann DVR I had just died right after pretty much 2 years. And I am so pleased it did (read my assessment on the Swann DVR)
I have had this DVR about a month now and I am blown away by how considerably better it is.
I have not set up the world-wide-web access but, so I will update my overview when I do that. But in each and every other way this DVR is superior than the Swann.
- I was extremely surprised to to see the image was sharper than the Swann on my monitor. Which seemed strange since it has the exact same cameras.
- The playback sharpness is Considerably SHARPER on this DVR. This is due to the fact the compression approach implemented ought to me Substantially Superior. The live feed and the playback appear the identical in fact, you can not even tell it is a recording. Even on the the Swann's highest setting the playback looked like garbage.

- The motion detector essentially Operates on the Defender. I think it has some type of pre roll. When you playback at times there will be no movement for a second (and you may well assume the motion detector was set off by mistake), then somebody will suddenly enter the frame - so as I said, it need to have some kind of pre-roll function built in. On the Swann, typically you would only see a person just after they were leaving the frame, you would see a shoulder, but no way to identify the individual, even even though they had walked down the hall 15 feet straight towards the camera!
- The Defenders Motion detector goes off ONLY WHEN THERE IS MOTION! On the Swann I had to regularly tweak the brightness and contrast to maintain the motion detector from going off each 10 seconds often. (Actually, not set perfect - the motion would go off each ten seconds - in a hall with no windows. Then the florescent bulb in the hall would go out and be replaced, I would have to set it up all more than once again.)
- The Defender still records whilst you are in playback mode! The Swann stops recording in playback mode :(
I genuinely could go on, but do not have the time at the moment, immediately after I set up the remote network access I will finish the evaluation.

I forgot until now to finish the critique!
When I initially set up the network access (remotely from my laptop) There was a slight error but I named the tech help who helped me place the "anything" outside the "one thing range" (I forgot precisely what we did) and due to the fact then it has worded flawlessly. I just checked it immediately after not working with it for months and I am nonetheless connected! I have not set up use on my iphone however given that I am still operating OS3 and have not updated to OS4. I've been also lazy to clear all my pictures and videos off my phone. So I am not positive how the iphone app works....
This is a good machine. I just learned that I can set it to show all eight cameras but when there is motion in one camera it will fill the screen on that camera for ten seconds (or longer if you want to set it that way). This is a nice setting because soon after a though you do not discover movement in the tiny frames. But when suddenly you have 9 squares (only 8 cameras) and the screen jumps to full screen mode - you discover that, so you notice the motion in the frame. Good for when a delivery person comes to the door and you have headphones on.

I'm a contractor and have set this up in countless commercial accounts of mine. Its excellent, minus a couple of quickly-to-get-applied-to quirks. Sets up very easy, Incredibly Pretty intuitive menu. AND... native english tech-savvy aid available to support with ANY aspect of operation (The longest I've waited on hold is two minutes..)
